What is Nordic Walking about?

Nordic Walking is a sport which involves walking with sticks, witch are specially designed for this activity, applying a technique that is similar to the one witch is used for ski touring. It is advisable to learn this technique of a titillated monitor so that the activity is beneficial to the practitioner. The Nordic Walking provides great advantages compared with other sports activities as they move about. 600 muscles (about 90% of the muscles of the human body). It is an activity witch is more oriented to the health than performance.

History:

Back in the 80s the United States were looking for a training during the summer for the cross-country skiers. They Practiced walking with ski poles, but since the poles did not meet the requirements for an effective walk, they abandoned this form of training. But in 1996, two Finnish physical students investigated for their dissertation on a project witch was called “sauvakävely”, walking with canes. They designed a kind of stick with a flap really tight to the hand. Then provided the results to a great manufacturer that polished and end-up the design of the sticks of Nordic walking that we know today. Soon, this form of training was revealed as tremendously beneficial to the health and indeed, in several countries in Europe, the social security finance Nordic Walking courses to its policyholders. Due to the multiple beneficial effects for the body, there are currently more than 2 million Germans and over 6 million people around the world which are practicing Nordic Walking. In Spain, in contrast, it is a new implementation which has specific projects in Granada (Sierra Nevada), Seville, Benidorm, Barcelona, Balearics Islands.

Why Nordic Walking?

The aim of Nordic Walking Mallorca is to convey a concept of activity in which practitioners of all ages can get a better quality of life and communicate with others.
The Nordic Walking should always lead to the relaxation, and towards a balance between body and mind. For this reason, the Nordic Walking is particularly suitable for elderly people with have back problems, diabetics, people who are sedentary and for pregnant women and overweight people but also for athletes who want to recover from the effort of a competition or are in preparation for the season.

Benefits of Nordic Walking:

Nordic Walking is more effective than walking without poles because it is used about 600 muscles. This way, the waist of energy is higher.
Thanks to the use of sticks, the lower joints are freed from a significant portion of its overload (up to 30% less than when you are running).

It is necessary to take into account various aspects in the application of the technique of Nordic Walking. Only if it’s practice correctly, the intended effects are achieved, both from the standpoint of health as in the purely sporting aspect.
Starting points:

- the basic technique of Nordic walking is similar to the movements of the cross-country
skiing.
- The idea “walking with sticks” is somehow incorrect.
- Nordic Walking uses physiological diagonal movement that we realize using sweeping
movements and adding appropriate step.
- Nordic Walking is effective when using the sticks, and therefore the arm. The gesture is
made with a great breadth, but without abandoning the natural pattern of movement.

The length of sticks has to be individually adapted with integrated strap.
